Adam Matthew has gone from strength to strength in recent times, and 2011 promises to be one of the most exciting periods for us yet. I have been working with our customers in America and around the world for many years, and the opportunity to take a leading role with the new American company offers many exciting challenges, both professionally and personally. We now have a fantastic portfolio of online content and a wonderful relationship with libraries and archives in the US, so the new base in Chicago will help define our path for the future.
Digital technology has revolutionised the academic environment, and it is a pleasure to see Adam Matthew resources changing how people learn. Whilst our customers range from public libraries and small colleges through to the biggest universities in the world, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my work is getting to build relationships with new users. With packages of incredibly diverse content, and pricing models which offer fairness and value to institutions of all sizes, I want to see our user community continue to grow, aided by the support of all the team at Adam Matthew Education.
I moved from the English countryside to the Chicago towers in January 2011, and really enjoy everything the fantastic city has to offer. I get a kick from travelling (which is lucky), love to be outdoors and am a keen cyclist.

David, Bill and I started Adam Matthew Digital in January 2007 and the response from the academic community to our online resources has been fantastic. From the outset we wanted to differentiate ourselves from the competition by producing a varied portfolio of primary source collections that ranged in content from manuscripts by medieval travellers to diaries and letters offering unique twentieth century social commentary.
We design our projects so that they are both detailed enough for major scholarly research and accessible for students to have fun with in the classroom. It is also extremely important to us that our collections are set at a price that enables access for institutions ranging in size and funding from small community colleges to Ivy League universities.
With our range of banded pricing and our Archive Secure payment plan we believe we have achieved this and thousands of students, scholars and librarians from all over the world now access our collections. My global travel means I’m lucky enough to get to meet with many of our users and these presentations and meetings are extremely rewarding and vital for making improvements with every new product release. We continue to add approximately ten new titles every year and we’re particularly excited to be covering new subject areas with our Jewish Life in America and Confidential Print: Middle East collections. We have also released Archive Explorer our federated search engine that is freely available to use across all Adam Matthew titles and makes finding content or researching new collections very easy.
We have many technology, sales and editorial partners and I enjoy liaising with them on a variety of issues. This can range from discussing our hosting requirements, to a presentation with one of our sales agents in Europe or East Asia to discussing a future project with a scholar or archivist. I look forward to seeing many of you on my travels and thanks for making my job such an enjoyable one!

My role is to manage all aspects of production at Adam Matthew and to work with the other members of the senior management team on the planning of forthcoming publication schedules and long-term editorial strategy, along with overseeing the day to day running of the Editorial Department.
I am also involved with the development of new projects. This takes me to archives and universities in the UK, USA and Europe, exploring material for inclusion in our resources, attending conferences and meeting with the academic community to keep up with current trends in research.
My academic background is in early modern religious and social history but my role at Adam Matthew has allowed me to explore archival collections from a huge array of time periods, from medieval family correspondence to nineteenth century accounts of overland travel in the American West. I have been the Editor for a variety of resources including Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice, Perdita Manuscripts, The American West, Confidential Print: North America, Travel Writing, Spectacle and World History and Medieval Family Life.
It is a real privilege to work with such exciting and important archival collections and to play a part in developing and producing innovative, imaginative resources for teaching and research.
Martha Fogg
Vice-President
martha@amedu.com
Researching and commissioning new projects is one of the key areas of my role, and I work with archives around the world to develop and enrich the content of our projects. I’ve developed a diverse range of resources for Adam Matthew, including London Low Life; Rock and Roll, Counterculture, Peace and Protest; Victorian Popular Culture and Mass Observation Online. I travel widely in the US and UK in pursuit of new project ideas, and have built up great relationships with libraries, archives and the academic community.
In addition to new project development, my focus is on listening to our customers and finding ways to improve our products. We are committed to producing the most innovative, creative resources possible, and it’s a real joy to develop new functionality to help teaching and research, such as the London Low Life interactive mapping or our new ‘My Archive’ feature.
Along with the rest of the senior management team, I oversee the daily running of the editorial department, long-term editorial strategy and the planning of our future publication schedules. As Vice-President of Adam Matthew Education, I am looking forward to contributing to the growth of our US operations over the next few years.

I am currently working on a whole range of development proposals which involve research in archives all over the world. These range from medieval studies through to the early modern and on to the modern period with Area Studies programs such as African American, African, Middle East and South Asian Studies as well as other digital initiatives such as Sex and Sexuality and more projects addressing Cultural Studies and Global Studies.
I am paying particular attention to consultancy, joint initiatives and open access possibilities as well as the normal commercial publishing model. Mapping, teaching applications, tutorials, audio and all types of visual technologies are also very high on my agenda.
It is a very exciting period for the Adam Matthew Group and I look forward to helping our team grow our US operations – with regular visits to our Chicago office over the next couple of years.

It is exciting that primary source materials are now being used increasingly at all levels of education. Our discussions with colleges and universities across the US show this to be the case and we hope that our digital collections make it easier to integrate these materials into teaching and research.
The development of resources such as The American West (with a new section in development on Native Indians based on the Ayer Collection at the Newberry Library); Rock & Roll, Counterculture, Peace and Protest (with much on zine culture and protest movements); and Global Commodities (a new resource for World History) are tailor made for this new audience. Many of these have a strong visual component, including maps and graphic data sets.
I look forward to discussing our projects and approach to digital publishing with many of you as I visit libraries and archives throughout the year. Our Chicago office has already trebled in size and we are grateful to all of our customers for their support and encouragement.

I control all aspects of the Finance function at Adam Matthew working closely with all three Directors. Over the last year I have been re-evaluating existing systems, improving and modifying where necessary, as well as introducing new systems to provide better KPIs and key management information.
I enjoy kick boxing, yoga, running, cinema and reading as well as working with the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Our electronic resources are under constant development to reflect both technical advances and customer expectations of hosting, functionality and industry standards. It is my job to ensure that Adam Matthew and our technical partners meet and exceed these demands. To this end I am involved in the development of all our projects, including wireframes and database designs. Conferences, customer feedback and regular contact with our existing and potential technical partners help me keep up to date with the latest innovations. I am also responsible for archiving our images and data.
As a senior member of the editorial team, I am involved in the overall strategy of the Editorial Department.

My role at Adam Matthew means that I am constantly liaising with scholars and librarians to facilitate the acquisition of our resources and it also gives me the brilliant job of showcasing these resources at universities around the world.
In 2012 I will be visiting institutions in the U.S. and Canada multiple times and also institutions in the U.K., Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
These visits give me the wonderful opportunity to obtain direct feedback from scholars and students utilising our resources. This is vital, as I am then able to impart this information to our editorial staff, which goes a long way towards shaping the content, functionality and usability of new projects in the early stages of development.
Jonathan Mansfield
Creative and Communications Manager
jon@amedu.com
Although I come from a predominantly fine-art education, my experience in e-commerce and online publishing in London has enabled me to combine creativity with technology and organisation at Adam Matthew.
Developing new functionality, new tools and layouts for the Adam Matthew websites is one of the most exciting parts of my role and I enjoy the ‘blue skies thinking’ creative process. This creativity/technology combination comes into use when producing other marketing materials, such as HTML email notifications and both online and printed adverts. Although our printed publicity material is currently outsourced, I have a lead role in their design, layout, production and dissemination.
As well as maintaining our corporate websites, I manage the licensing process of digital purchases and much of the post-sale customer service, including the provision of usage statistics (both counter compliant and Google Analytics) and customer profile updates.
I am a ‘typical’ creative, who is always looking for new ways to do things and a natural organiser, keen to develop new systems whenever required. Thankfully, Adam Matthew is both a dynamic and innovative publishing company and keeps me busy in all aspects of my varied role.
Lauren Edwards
Marketing Communications Coordinator

My role is extremely diverse and I am often involved in a variety of different tasks. Typically I help to manage our customer database, organise online trial access, and assist with publicity and the receipt of licence agreements.
I also help to deliver sales campaigns and respond to pricing enquires. I am also responsible for organising our exhibits and attendance at major conferences and for ensuring that any necessary conference sponsorship is taken care of.

I joined Adam Matthew in 2006 after several years in public and university libraries, bringing academic baggage in the form of a Masters in Literature, with a particular specialisation in the rise of the novel. With this background, exploring original document collections in the hallowed depths of archives was the ultimate perk, job satisfaction guaranteed! As an Editor I worked on China: Trade, Politics and Culture 1793-1980 and Victorian Popular Culture, and also explored and assessed archival material for China: Culture and Society and Travel Writing, Spectacle and World History.
Since the birth of my two boys in 2008 and 2010, and the wonders of part-time working, I have become the go-to woman for digital image checking and indexing. I have had the good fortune to work with material from Mass Observation Online; The First World War: Personal Experiences; Rock and Roll, Counterculture, Peace and Protest and Global Commodities. This varied but enthralling spectrum of documents is just as wonderful in digital guise as in their original form, and the next best thing to rummaging around in the archive in person. It’s impossible not to be drawn to the stories within such fascinating material, and a strong will and steely resolve is essential to resist reading every word. I don’t often succeed – some things are just too good to pass by.
In my rare and precious moments of free time, you’ll find me with a book in my hand a tin of biscuits within easy reach.

My role as Project Editor for Adam Matthew is incredibly diverse and interesting. With responsibilities that include assessing and selecting archival material, attending conferences, meeting with archivists and librarians, quality checking images, indexing documents and managing the design and build of my projects; every working day is different.
The best part of my job is that it allows me to explore different areas of history as I work and talk to archivists and academics passionate about their specialist subjects. I am currently working on our Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice project and one of our exciting new projects: The First World War: Personal Experiences.
Nick Jackson
Editorial Assistant
nickj@amedu.com
I joined Adam Matthew in September 2008. Since then I have worked on a variety of digital resources encompassing a wider variety of archival material: I’ve read nineteenth-century pulp fiction to index it for American West, visited archives in France to research written material and artefacts for The First World War, and dealt with US court reports, plantation records and correspondence from the Haitian Revolution (among much else) for Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice. In 2010 I edited my first resource, Confidential Print: Middle East, coordinating its publication from selecting the material at the National Archives, through scanning, checking and indexing to putting together the website.
In my spare time I read, write, drink odd Belgian beers and go to the gym too seldom to make it fully worthwhile.

Since joining Adam Matthew in April 2010, I have worked on diverse projects including Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice; Victorian Popular Culture; Rock and Roll: Counter Culture, Peace & Protest; and Global Commodities: Trade, Exploration and Cultural Exchange. A highlight for me has been the release of ‘Music Hall, Theatre and Popular Entertainment’, the third section of Victorian Popular Culture. My main responsibilities on this project included indexing material, writing introductions to the major thematic areas, and compiling the image gallery and venues dictionary. The project enabled me to indulge my love of graphic ephemera by working with a wide range of printed articles from handbills to theatrical posters. I am currently working to develop our exciting Global Commodities project by selecting archival material, liaising with consultant editors, and forming the contextual framework for the project.
Before joining Adam Matthew, I held an internship at the British Museum and postdoctoral fellowships at the Huntington Library (California) and the Universities of Warwick and Edinburgh. I am passionate about history in general but my main interests are in the eighteenth century, particularly in consumer, visual and material culture. My PhD, from the University of Warwick, explored the meanings and uses of advertising trade cards. I continue to work on material for publication and present papers at academic conferences and workshops.
I enjoy the varied nature of my role at Adam Matthew and the opportunities it affords for engaging with fascinating archival collections while working on historically important and stimulating projects.
Aodhán Kelly
Assistant Editor

I joined Adam Matthew in April 2010 after completing a research Master’s in History and having worked in other media forms. In my role here as Assistant Editor I have been involved in some very stimulating and exciting project work. I was greatly involved in the creation of our London Low Life resource with Martha and Nick, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Upcoming project work for me includes our First World War resource as well as further updates to Mass Observation Online. Alongside the various office duties involved in creating digital resources my job also involves travelling to archives and conferences to assess primary source materials and gain ideas for future projects. Outside of work I enjoy all kinds of sports and previously competed as an international athlete in rowing for my native Ireland.
Sarah Phillips
Editor
sarahp@amedu.com
With an academic background in History and English Literature, I joined Adam Matthew in April 2010. I have worked on some fantastic projects including indexing court records for Slavery, Abolition and Social Justice, assisting Jade in the production of Jewish Life in America, c1654-1954 and managing the digital scanning of the material for the forthcoming project Romanticism: Life, Literature and Landscape. I have also attended conferences and begun formulating ideas and sourcing material for a developing project.
There are many exciting aspects to my role; I relish the opportunities to travel both nationally and internationally; visiting archives and attending conferences enabling me to keep up-to-date with current academic trends, formulate new project ideas and meet with academics. I love working with manuscript material and taking a project through production; creating a resource that makes the most of the material and seeing ideas come to life is a creative, thoughtful and analytical process that I relish.
Tom Derrick
Editorial Assistant, Development and Communications

I joined Adam Matthew in July 2011 having previously worked in Advertising & Marketing. Joining the Editorial team in a Development & Communications role, will enable me to contribute to all aspects of the project lifecycle, from engaging customer feedback to delivering campaign promotions.
To date I have been busy supporting editorial production of our fascinating collection Rock and Roll, Counterculture, Peace and Protest. I’ve found the project a joy to work on, becoming immersed in activities including writing an editorial feature on the Vietnam War, to creating an online exhibition, where I was able to indulge my interests in the Space Race.
Alongside my work on Rock and Roll, I have sourced material for the latest instalment of 18th Century Journals, as well as being fortunate enough to travel to the National Archives and the University of Sussex to assess archival manuscripts.
I am excited by the prospect of working with this motivated team and look forward to ensuring the already excellent reputation of Adam Matthew continues to grow.
Lauren Jones
Editorial Assistant
laurenj@amedu.com
Although still relatively new to the editorial team at Adam Matthew I feel that I have already accomplished a lot here in my role as Editorial Assistant. From week one I have been involved with one of our most exciting and visually stimulating collections, Rock and Roll, Counterculture, Peace and Protest, in a variety of aspects. From image checking to indexing video footage from the 1950s-1970s, selecting images for our gallery feature and writing content for the resource itself, I have been fully immersed in the project. I have also begun assessing and selecting material from the Bill Douglas Centre at Exeter University for Part IV of our already successful resource, Victorian Popular Culture on early film. Personally, I can’t think of a better way to begin a career in publishing; after all, there’s nothing like being thrown in at the deep end to teach you how to swim!
After completing my BA at Swansea University in English Literature and American Studies and going on to an MA in English Literature: Gender and Culture – specialising in eighteenth century literature written by women – I am thrilled to be working for an academic publisher whose passion and potential for further research into similar areas seems limitless.
I look forward to contributing to an already reputable and expanding company and I am excited about the possibilities that await me in my future at Adam Matthew.
Georgina Phipps
Editorial Assistant
georgina@amedu.com
Since joining Adam Matthew in July 2011 I have mostly assisted Sarah on Romanticism: Life, Literature and Landscape. In the course of this work I have engaged with a broad variety of material, everything from letters and newspapers to stunning artwork, and have consequently developed an intimate knowledge of the Romanticism collections and become a minor Wordsworth aficionado. I’ve also worked on some small tasks for First World War and visited the British Library and National Archives to assess material for future projects.
Prior to Adam Matthew I worked in book publishing, taught English in China, and studied History and German at university. In joining Adam Matthew I was delighted to discover a role that would allow me to indulge my historical enthusiasm on a daily basis, and certainly the most fulfilling aspect of my work so far has been the opportunity it affords for learning about widely diverse areas of history. Yet while my overriding obsession is with the past, I cannot avoid living in the present, and having moved from print to digital publishing I am very excited to be playing a role in the development of digital humanities as its influence on learning, teaching and research continues to grow.
Ruth Manton
HR Manager and PA to Bill Pidduck

As PA to Bill Pidduck I get to assist in many areas of his work. Most recently this has included the privilege of exploring archives and capturing information for forthcoming digital collections. I have particularly enjoyed looking at material to be featured in our new Global Commodities project, which looks at the history of commodities such as chocolate and the impact that these have made on the world.
I have also enjoyed attending conferences such as the AJHS Scholar’s conference in New York and the ACRL conference in Philadelphia as it is good to get your feedback. Another fascinating aspect of my work has been helping to record interviews with key cultural commentators such as Bill Harry, Barry Miles and Suzi Quatro for our Rock & Roll project.
In addition I look after HR, Health & Safety and help to offset our carbon footprint in partnership with Climate Care.
Delyth Reid
PA to David Tyler
delyth@amedu.com
Originally from Wales I joined Adam Matthew in January 2007 as PA to David Tyler. As well as assisting David in the office I have been lucky enough to travel to various locations and help David with the research of projects through different archives, the most memorable to date being a trip to Ypres in Belgium, to research material for our First World War project.
I have had a varied career whilst moving around the UK and Europe with my husband's job (Cyprus, Sardinia, and Shetland to name a few) as well as bringing up my only son. In my spare time I enjoy meeting up with our friends and family, reading or chilling out with my husband and my cat.
Angie Gilliat
Finance Assistant
angie@amedu.com
Working in the Finance Department one of my primary roles is to process our customers’ orders and issue invoices. This follows through to managing the sales ledger in our accounts system, updating sales reports and processing payments. I also have the responsibility to collate sales information to calculate and pay royalties to the archives whose material is used in our microfilm and digital projects. I enjoy being a part of the Adam Matthew team and to be dealing with such erudite products and people.
At home I enjoy gardening, reading, cryptic crosswords and am an avid England cricket follower.
Adele Keane
Office Coordinator
adele@amedu.com
I joined Adam Matthew in January 2011. As Office Coordinator I am responsible for the operation of the ‘behind the scenes’ aspects of the office - a very varied role which keeps me busy. In one day I can be negotiating phone or utility contracts, liaising with contractors and I’ve even been known to sort the recycling. My background is in Flight Operations and I am lucky to have been able to travel to many places around the world. These days I’m more of a home bird and love spending time with the love of my life – my Westie, Lulu!
