China: Culture and Society

Sources from the Wason Pamphlet Collection at Cornell University

Spanning three centuries (c1750-1929), this collection will make available for the first time extremely rare pamphlets from the Charles W. Wason Collection on East Asia, at Cornell University Library; one of the oldest and most distinctive collections of its kind, and a very rich source for research on China.

The Wason Pamphlet collection is being digitized in its entirety (some 1,200 pamphlets bound in c220 volumes) and in full colour. It will be entirely full-text searchable. This will allow for the collection to be comprehensively studied and fully appreciated, particularly the many pamphlets that feature superb colour illustrations and highly designed cover art. As there is no comparable digital project offering this type of material, this project will meet the need and growing demand for English language research sources relating to China and the West, and will address a wide variety of research interests and topics surrounding Chinese history, religion, culture and everyday life.

This project will also complement and add to the Asian themed collections already contained within Adam Matthew Education's Asian Discovery Package, and build on the success of our highly popular China: Trade, Politics and Culture collection.

China: The Wason Pamphlet Collection

There was hardly a topic that was not the focus of a published pamphlet, including language and literature, games and pastimes, architecture, natural history, opium, foot binding, philosophy, religion and mythology, international relations, and myriad other topics"

Librarian for Western Languages, Harvard-Yenching Library, Harvard University
